When are Button Aids used?
Buttoning aids are tools that make it easier to close a button when fingers and hands - or just one hand - do not work well for various reasons. This could be, for example:
- numbness in fingers and hands - for example with a sensory disorder
- shaking (tremor) if you have Parkinson's disease
- weakness or pain in the hands or decreased finger mobility in rheumatism or arthritis
- missing one hand - from birth or through amputationn
- immobility of one hand - for example through immobilization in a cast after an accident or an operation
- loss of strength due to old age
Button aids help with closing buttons on shirts, blouses, jackets, trousers or other items of clothing that are appropriately buttoned.

This is how Button Aids work
The principle of buttoning aids is as simple as it is ingenious: the little helpers consist of a handle and a narrow, elongated eyelet or metal loop. Loops tighten when pulled. The wire loop, sometimes called the “button claw”, is pushed through the buttonhole and placed around the button. With a slight twist of the wrist, the button is then pulled through the opening into the opposite direction which closes the button. Opening works the same way, only from the other side of the garment. Dressing with the help of a button aid takes some practice. Occupational therapists can offer support for this. In a special dressing session, they show affected people how to gain the necessary dexterity to use buttoning aids. As a result, people with gripping difficulties in everyday life gain more independence in dressing.
Features of Button Aids
The handles of button aids are usually made of plastic. The material is robust and uncomplicated. Versions with a particularly thick handle are also available. Other than the larger size, those models often have an anti-slip coating to provide extra grip. Such button aids are very easy to hold – especially for people who find it difficult to close their fingers.
It is even possible to button clothes with one hand. Those who prefer other materials will also find button aids with handles made of wood or metal. The eyelet is usually made of stainless steel to avoid corrosion and brittleness. You can therefore rely on your dressing aid to function perfectly for a long time. Buy buttoning aids now!
Some models also have a hook at the end of the handle: you can hook this into the eyelet of a zipper and thus effortlessly open or close the zipper. These tools are zipper aid and button aid in one.
Button hooks usually consist of a metal hook on a long stick with a handle. During the Victorian Era it was mainly used as a boot button hook – a closing or opening aid for ladies' boots with buttons. Today's button aids usually have a metal loop instead of a hook.
Zip Aids for even more Independence when Dressing
In addition to zipper hooks, there are other zipper aids to help you put on or take off clothes with zippers. Zip extensions can be attached to the slide of a zip. In this way, the zipper can easily be gripped and moved up or down without great effort.
Depending on the model, these zipper aids possess either a loop or a grip ring. You just have to hook a finger into the opening and you can easily pull the zipper in the desired direction. With colored sets, you can even choose the zip extensions to match the respective garment. Neutral variants made of stainless steel are suitable for every color. The practical everyday helpers can of course also be used for opening and closing suitcases and bags.
In addition to button aids and zipper aids, you will also find practical shoehorns and boot jacks in our online shop to help you get fully dressed.
